Philip
Murray - Chairman, President & CEO
Philip J. Murray has been involved in maritime
transportation and international trade for more than 40
years. He is a founding governor and now Chairman,
President and CEO of the Maritime Security Council. Mr.
Murray previously served as an Executive with one of the
world’s largest ocean carrier and terminal operators,
and was responsible for successfully leading their
global effort in the areas of Security, Safety, Cargo
Loss Prevention and Hazardous Materials Handling. A
strong supporter of assisting government efforts in the
areas of maritime security, anti-terrorism and drug
interdiction, Mr. Murray was a driving force in the
establishment of several key industry/government
partnerships, including the Super Carrier Initiative
Program and C-TPAT.
Mr. Murray has long realized the need to engage
and support the security efforts of our Caribbean and
Latin American trading partners and is recognized as one
of the four founders of the BASC initiative, a Latin
American based initiative that is known worldwide as a
model for manufacturing and transportation security.
This organization, started in 1995 has now grown to well
over 3,000 members throughout Latin America and the
Caribbean.
He is a graduate, course developer and visiting
instructor at The Federal Law Enforcement Training
Center’s Program on Seaport Security and Anti-Terrorism.
Mr. Murray has visited over 65 countries, 80
manufacturing sites and more than 130 ports and
terminals conducting security training, vulnerability
and threat assessments and security site surveys to
further the cause of supply chain security. He has been
recognized for his efforts by both industry and
government on many occasions and is the recipient of The
US Government’s “National Performance Review” award and
many industry awards including the maritime industry’s
“Award of Excellence.”
Mr. Murray also has an extensive background in
port and terminal development and operations having
served as General Manager, Caribbean Development and
General Manager, Caribbean & Latin America opening
and/or operating ports and container terminals in
fourteen countries. While introducing containerization
to the Caribbean Mr. Murray also served as resident
country manager for Sea-Land in Jamaica, Haiti,
Trinidad, Guyana, Aruba and Curacao.
He remains involved within the transportation
industry as President and CEO of PJ Murray Associates,
Inc. a company devoted to providing security training
and operating solutions to maritime transportation
clients, importers and exporters worldwide. He served as
technical advisor on transportation security to The U.S.
Department of State’s Overseas Security Advisory
Council, The White House and he was Vice Chair of the
MARAD/Organization of American States Committee on Port
Security. He is a founding member of the BIMCO
(Copenhagen) Maritime Security Committee and a member of
the Marine Transportation System National Advisory
Council (MTSNAC).
Mr. Murray is a published author and has spoken
on the issues of transportation security, terrorism,
drug interdiction, stowaways and piracy in the U.S.,
Asia, Caribbean, South and Central America, and Europe.
